Velodyne LiDAR

Velodyne LiDAR, an US based leading manufacturer of laser systems and sensors, opened its first subsidiary in Rüsselsheim in 2016. Founded in Morgan Hill (California), the company first operated in the audio sector. Since 2007, they have been developing the LiDAR technology. LiDAR (Light detection and ranging) is a special method for visual speed and distance measurement via laser beam. Within the method, a multispectral camera that is able to process one million data points per second catches the laser signals. Autonomous vehicles use this system to recognize and drive around barriers occurring in traffic. When Google first tested its autonomous cars in 2010, the cars were equipped with LiDAR technology made by Velodyne. Other customers of the company, besides Google, are Ford, Volvo, Caterpillar and TomTom.
